 CELEBRATING FALL OF BERLIN WALL

A demonstration and program calling for transforming walls of separation into bridges for understanding will take place Thursday in Nevada City. This is part of a global event called November 9 Day of Action: World Without Walls.

The event will  start at the Broad Street bridge at 4:30 reflecting the spirit of Pope Francis’ appeal:  “Build bridges of dialogue, not barriers of resentment.”  People may bring their own signs highlighting physical or figurative “walls” harmful to peace and justice.

At 5:30 at the Nevada City Methodist Church on  Broad St. there will be refreshments followed by short videos and speakers  about  ways to break down barriers and build bridges of dialogue and justice. Questions will follow.  Information will be available from organizations working to foster connections and better relations.

Some of the “walls” that are part of  the program will be the proposed US/Mexico Border Wall, Israel’s wall into Palestinian territory, the local Centennial Dam, prison walls of mass incarceration, disproportionate imprisonment of persons of color, and  detention of immigrants.

November 9 was the date chosen for the global and local actions as it is the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.   Since that time, and especially recently, nearly seventy new walls that separate nations and peoples from each other have been built or are in construction.  Barrier walls generally undermine human rights and interfere with fair access to resources and impact the environment.

The local event is co-sponsored by several local peace and justice organizations, including the Immigration Team of Women Indivisible of Nevada County, Palestine-Israel Working Group of the Peace Center of Nevada County, Earth Justice Ministries, Stop the Centennial Dam, Grass Valley Friends Meeting (Quakers), Palestine-Israel Task Force of Northern California-Nevada Conference of United Methodist Church, Church and Society Committee of Nevada City United Methodist Church and The Grass Valley Friends Meeting (Quakers).

The public is welcome to any or all of the World Without Walls event.
