The reopening of the Idaho-Maryland Mine by RiseGold has been a long fought fight, and now after Rise’s humiliating defeat at the county planning commission meeting in May they are attempting to claim vested rights. Vested rights are a legal loophole which allows already open mining operations to be exempt from certain laws and regulations including all of those that we have been fighting for. The problem with this however is that the Idaho-Maryland mine has been closed since 1956 something which disqualifies it from having vested rights. On October 27th from 9am to presumably 5pm the county of Nevada will oversee Rise’s claim to vested rights, and to make sure that they don’t get away with this we need to pack the room. MineWatch and Sunrise Movement will be there for the whole meeting and will be set up outside of the county building with information and scripts if you wish to speak. If speaking is something you wish to do then we recommend you show up earlier at around 7:30 or 8:00 in order to claim a ticket to speak. In order to shut down Rise’s latest attempt at opening this destructive mine we need to rally in mass to the Nevada County Government Center(the Rood Center) next to the Wayne Brown Correctional facility, and Madelyn Helling library.
